Gulfstream G650 Charter from Chicago

A Gulfstream G650 charter removes the fuel stop from almost every trip a Chicago-based traveller will ever plan. The G650ER carries 7,500 nm, cruises at 516 kts with Mach 0.85 normal, 0.925 max available, and puts 14 people across four living areas in a cabin 46.8 ft long and 98 inches wide.

It is the most capable aircraft most charter buyers will ever book, and it is priced accordingly at $16,500–$22,000 per flight hour. The question is never whether it can do the trip. The question is whether the trip needs it.

What a Gulfstream G650 charter actually buys

Three capabilities, and they are worth separating. The first is reach: 7,500 nm puts Chicago to Tokyo, Chicago to Dubai and Chicago to Hong Kong in one leg, which no other type on the long range jet page manages consistently. The second is speed — a normal cruise of 516 kts and a high-speed capability at Mach 0.85 normal, 0.925 max that trims real time off a twelve-hour sector rather than a rounding error off a two-hour one.

The third is cabin altitude. The G650ER pressurises to roughly 4,850 ft of cabin altitude at 51,000 ft, which is lower than anything else in the class. On a thirteen-hour flight the difference between a 4,800 ft cabin and a 7,000 ft cabin is the difference between arriving able to work and arriving needing a day. That is the least glamorous and most valuable specification on the sheet.

Everything else follows from those: 195 cu ft of baggage, ka-band high-speed, global coverage, and a galley sized for two crew to serve four meal services across a long night.

Gulfstream G650ER specifications

The ER is the extended-range variant of the G650 and the one worth chartering for the longest legs; a standard G650 carries roughly 500 nm less. Confirm which variant is on the trip sheet before you plan a non-stop that depends on the last few hundred miles.

Four living areas, berths and crew rest

The four-zone layout

The typical charter layout runs a forward galley and crew rest, a four-place club, a four-place conference group, a second club or credenza area, and an aft stateroom with a full-width berthable divan ahead of the enclosed, externally serviced lavatory. At 46.8 ft there is room for all four without any of them feeling like a corridor.

Width is 98 inches and height is 77 inches — the tallest cabin in the class — so a tall passenger walks the length of the aircraft upright. Gulfstream's sixteen panoramic windows are the visual signature and genuinely change how the cabin feels on a daylight arrival.

Sleeping ten, realistically

Gulfstream quotes 13–16 across four living areas, sleeping up to 10. In practice a charter G650ER sleeps four to six well and up to ten if everyone accepts a berthed seat rather than a bed. The aft stateroom, with a door or a solid divider on most airframes, is the only true private sleeping space in this comparison set and it is the reason principals pick this aircraft for a Tokyo overnight.

On a westbound Pacific crossing the useful pattern is a meal service in the first two hours, the aft stateroom dark for eight, and a light second service before descent. Tell the desk the sleep plan when you book so the operator briefs the cabin attendant rather than improvising at 40,000 ft.

The forward crew rest bunk

A dedicated forward crew rest area with a bunk is standard on most charter G650ERs, which is what makes a legal thirteen-hour augmented sector practical. The relief pilot rests properly out of the passenger cabin, so a three or four-pilot crew costs you no seats. Cabin crew on a long sector rest in the same area or in the forward club depending on the fit.

What an ultra long range hour costs

Typical market range is $16,500–$22,000 per flight hour, the top of the long-range band and roughly $2,000 above a Global 6000 at the floor. On very long trips the operator will also quote a daily minimum and crew expenses, which on a multi-day international itinerary can matter more than the hourly figure. The cost guide and the hourly rates page set out how those stack.

Chicago non-stops: London to Dubai in one leg

London at roughly 3,430 nm and Paris at roughly 3,720 nm are short legs for this airplane — non-stop in both directions with fuel to divert well beyond the destination alternate. Chicago to Honolulu at around 3,600 nm is a non-stop in either direction regardless of the season. None of those trips need a G650ER; they simply happen faster and with more cabin in one.

The legs that justify the type start further out. Chicago to Tokyo is roughly 5,450 nm and goes non-stop westbound in about twelve and a half hours even against the Pacific flow, where a heavy jet needs a technical stop at Anchorage. Chicago to Dubai at roughly 6,300 nm and Chicago to Hong Kong at roughly 6,550 nm are both single-leg trips. Chicago to Sydney at roughly 8,150 nm is beyond even the ER and takes one stop.

Gulfstream G650 versus the Global 6000 and the Falcon 8X

Against the Global 6000, the G650ER carries 1,500 nm more range and cruises 28 knots faster in the same 98-inch cabin width, for about $2,000 more per hour at the floor. If the mission is Europe or Tokyo, the Global does it too and saves you real money. If the mission is Dubai or Hong Kong non-stop, only the Gulfstream is reliable.

Against the Falcon 8X, the G650ER carries 1,050 nm more range and 55 cu ft more baggage, and is wider by 6 inches. The Falcon costs roughly $3,000 less at the floor, gets into shorter runways, and fits under the Teterboro weight limit comfortably. For a European mission with awkward airports the 8X is arguably the better tool.

For companies running this kind of travel regularly, the corporate jet charter desk can hold availability on specific tails rather than shopping the market each time. Send the itinerary to the quote desk with dates and passenger count and ask for all three priced against it.

Frequently asked questions

What international handling does an ultra long range trip need?

More lead time than a European trip. Beyond permits, slots and handling at each stop, a Chicago to Asia or Middle East sector needs overflight permits from every state on the route, some of which take five to ten working days. The operator's trip support provider files them. Expect handling, permits and fuel to be quoted as pass-through costs, and expect the desk to ask for passport scans early because visa and permit lead times drive the schedule.

How does customs work returning to Chicago from Asia?

You clear at a US port of entry with CBP on the field. O'Hare and Midway both have full-time CBP and enough runway for a G650ER at landing weight. DuPage and Chicago Executive offer user-fee customs with advance notice but limited officer hours, which rarely suit an arrival timed by a thirteen-hour sector. The operator files eAPIS in both directions; confirm crew and passenger manifests at least 24 hours ahead.

How many pilots fly Chicago to Tokyo non-stop?

Three or four. FAA Part 135 limits an unaugmented two-pilot crew to 10 hours of flight time in 24 consecutive hours, and a twelve to thirteen hour sector exceeds that, so the operator augments the crew under its approved programme and uses the forward crew rest bunk in flight. Ask how many pilots and cabin crew are quoted — it affects both the cost and whether the sector can legally be flown non-stop at all.

Is the cabin connectivity usable for a full working day?

Yes. Ka-band high-speed, global coverage means genuine global satellite coverage including polar and mid-Pacific routes, supporting video conferencing, VPN, large file transfer and voice for a full cabin. It is the best-equipped aircraft in this comparison for a working flight. Data is still metered by the operator's plan, so agree the allowance in advance if you intend to run video calls for hours rather than minutes.

Why can a G650ER not use Teterboro?

Teterboro applies a 100,000 lb maximum takeoff weight limit, and the G650ER's maximum takeoff weight is above it at roughly 103,600 lb. A standard G650 at roughly 99,600 lb is under the limit and can operate there. If a New York leg matters to your itinerary, either specify the standard variant or plan on Westchester, Morristown or Newark and accept the extra ground time.

Is a G650ER worth it for a London trip?

Rarely, on capability grounds. A Global 6000, a Falcon 8X and even a Gulfstream G450 all fly Chicago to London non-stop, and the G650ER saves perhaps thirty to forty minutes on the sector. What you buy is the cabin, the lower cabin altitude and the schedule flexibility. If those matter, book it. If the priority is cost per seat, the class below does the same trip.
