Private Jet Types and Sizes: The Eleven Charter Classes

The private jet types and sizes available out of Chicago sort into eleven working classes, from six-seat piston twins that cost less per hour than a chauffeured car to VIP airliners that move a hockey roster with its equipment. Operators price by those eleven labels, brokers quote by them, and trip sheets are written in them. Learning the categories is the fastest way to stop guessing at a quote and start reading one.

How the eleven private jet types and sizes compare

Read the table left to right and stop at the first row that satisfies your passenger count and your leg length. That row is usually the right aircraft. Rows below it force a fuel stop or leave someone behind. Rows above it sell comfort you may genuinely want, but you should choose it deliberately rather than drift into it.

The hourly figures in the last column are what operators quote each other, not what you pay. A trip price adds any positioning leg needed to bring the aircraft to you, federal excise tax, landing and ramp fees, catering, deicing in winter and often a daily minimum. A one-hour flight therefore almost never costs one hour of rate, and a strong winter headwind can add a fifth to the flying time on a westbound leg before any of those extras are counted.

What those five columns hide

Published range assumes roughly four passengers, standard IFR reserves and still air. Fly the same aircraft westbound out of Chicago in January and a jet stream running at 120 knots can take fifteen to twenty percent off it. That is why a light jet that shows 2,000 nm on paper still stops for fuel on the way to Los Angeles in winter, and why the same tail makes it non-stop in June.

Cabin height is the specification passengers actually notice. Below about five feet five inches you are moving through the cabin bent over, which nobody minds for seventy minutes and everybody minds for four hours. The step from super light to midsize is where a stand-up aisle starts to appear, and it is the single most requested upgrade we handle after seat count.

Seat count and usable seat count are different numbers. Manufacturers count belted lavatory seats, and operators publish them, but nobody wants to sit on the lavatory for three hours next to a colleague. Baggage volume runs out before seats do on ski and golf trips: six passengers with six sets of clubs will fill a light jet's hold long before the sixth seat is a problem.

The spread inside each class is mostly airframe age, engine programme and connectivity. A twenty-year-old midsize jet with no wifi and a mid-life engine reserve sits near the bottom of its band. A five-year-old aircraft with Ka-band and a fresh interior sits at the top. Both are legal, both are safe if the operator is properly vetted, and they can differ by thirty percent on price.

Start with the passenger count

One to four passengers

This is where the cheapest jet answer lives. A very light jet or an entry light jet carries four people and their overnight bags comfortably on legs up to about two hours, and on a short regional trip a turboprop will beat both on total cost without costing meaningful time. Four passengers is also the count at which published range figures are honest, so planning is simpler.

Five to seven passengers

Five is the number that quietly breaks very light jets, because the fifth seat is often the belted lavatory. Light jets are the Midwest default at this count: six real seats, an enclosed lavatory on most tails, and enough baggage volume for a week away. Super light jets add an hour of range and a slightly taller cabin for a few hundred dollars an hour more.

Eight to ten passengers

At eight passengers with luggage you are into midsize and super midsize territory whether you like the price or not. A light jet with eight aboard is legal on many tails and unpleasant on all of them, and the fuel penalty of a full cabin usually forces a stop anyway. This is the count where paying more often buys you a non-stop rather than just legroom.

Eleven to nineteen passengers

Heavy jets start at ten to twelve and long range jets carry up to nineteen with a real galley, crew rest and a stateroom on the largest cabins. Two midsize jets flying in formation is sometimes cheaper than one heavy jet, and for a board that wants to arrive together it is sometimes worse. Compare both, honestly, before assuming the single aircraft wins.

Twenty passengers and up

Above nineteen seats you are chartering an airliner with a VIP or high-density interior. Sports teams, incentive groups and touring parties book these, and the economics change completely: the per-seat cost can drop below a business-class ticket while the total invoice climbs into six figures. Ramp space and runway length at the origin field become planning constraints rather than footnotes.

Then check the leg length

Under 400 nautical miles

Milwaukee, South Bend, Madison, Grand Rapids and Peoria all sit inside this band. The flight is thirty to forty-five minutes and almost every operator bills a one-hour or ninety-minute minimum, so the aircraft is airborne for less time than you spend at the FBO. Turboprops and pistons are genuinely competitive here, and on the shortest of these hops driving is often the rational choice.

400 to 1,200 nautical miles

This is the heart of the Chicago charter market: New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Nashville, Toronto, Naples and Palm Beach. Light and midsize jets do the overwhelming majority of this work non-stop with a full cabin. Above about 1,000 nm, a full load of passengers and baggage starts to matter to the fuel plan, so confirm the loading assumption on the trip sheet rather than the brochure.

1,200 to 2,000 nautical miles

Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Light jets can reach the first two with a light load in favourable winds and routinely cannot reach the last two non-stop westbound in winter. Super light and midsize aircraft are the entry point for a dependable non-stop, and super midsize is where a full cabin plus bags stops being a fuel-planning conversation.

Beyond 2,000 nautical miles

Hawaii, Europe, South America and Asia. Heavy jets cover most of the Atlantic from Chicago; long range jets cover the Pacific and the Gulf. Crew duty limits become as binding as fuel: a single crew cannot legally fly indefinitely, so a second crew or a scheduled rest stop appears in the plan and in the price. Budget for both at the enquiry stage.

The eleven classes in one paragraph each

Every class below has a full page with specifications, representative aircraft, honest trade-offs and typical rates. Follow the one that matches the row you stopped at in the table.

Piston aircraft charter is the least glamorous and occasionally the smartest answer in the book. Three to five passengers, seated headroom only, no lavatory, and an hourly rate low enough that a 200 nm hop costs less than a chauffeured ground transfer for the same group. Weather cancels these flights more often than any other class, so keep a backup plan.

Turboprop charter buys a real cabin, six to nine seats and the ability to use short and unpaved runways at roughly half the hourly cost of a light jet. On any leg under about 400 nm the block-time difference against a jet is minutes, not hours, which is why King Airs and PC-12s stay busy across the Midwest.

Very light jet charter is the cheapest way to buy jet speed. Four passengers, jet altitudes above the weather, and a cabin you sit in rather than stand in. The class works beautifully for one to four people on a two-hour leg and gets cramped quickly beyond that, particularly if anyone is bringing more than a carry-on.

Light jet charter is the workhorse of this market. Six or seven seats, an enclosed lavatory on most tails, non-stop to New York, Miami, Denver, Aspen and Naples, and enough operators based in the region that availability on short notice is realistic. If you have no strong reason to choose otherwise, this is the class to price first.

Super light jet charter exists because buyers kept asking for one more hour of range and one more inch of headroom without a midsize invoice. Seven or eight passengers, transcontinental reach in most conditions, and a cabin that is noticeably easier to move around than a light jet on a four-hour leg.

Midsize jet charter is where the cabin stops being a compromise. Seven to nine passengers, an externally serviced lavatory, real baggage volume and dependable coast-to-coast range. It is the class most often recommended for a full cabin travelling more than three hours, and the one where the price step feels justified afterwards.

Super midsize jet charter gives you a genuine stand-up cabin, 3,000-plus nautical miles and eight to ten passengers with luggage that does not have to be rationed. Challenger 300s, Longitudes and G280s dominate this segment, and their operators tend to be the larger, more heavily audited fleets in the region.

Heavy jet charter covers ten to sixteen passengers on intercontinental legs with a full galley, a flight attendant as standard and crew rest for the return. This is also the smallest class most people should consider for a transatlantic trip from Chicago with a full passenger load and winter winds in the plan.

Long range jet charter is what you book when a fuel stop is genuinely unacceptable — a Tokyo or Dubai leg where the cabin has to work as an office by day and a bedroom by night. Twelve to nineteen passengers, the tallest cabins outside an airliner, and hourly rates to match.

VIP airliner charter covers everything from a nineteen-seat Lineage to a 120-seat narrowbody in a charter configuration. Teams, roadshows and incentive travel live here. Plan the airport before the aircraft: several Chicago-area fields cannot take a BBJ at operating weight.

Helicopter charter solves the problem no fixed-wing aircraft can — landing where there is no runway. Airport-to-venue transfers, shoreline sightseeing and site access across the Illinois and Indiana corridor. Range is short, weather minimums are strict, and the cabin is small, but for the last twenty miles nothing else competes.

Where buyers get this decision wrong

The most common error is choosing the class from the aircraft photographs rather than from the manifest. The second is assuming that a bigger aircraft is always faster: on a 640 nm leg the difference between a very light jet and a super midsize is about twenty minutes of block time, against a price gap that can exceed ten thousand dollars. Speed is bought in cabin comfort, not in the clock, until the leg is long.

The third error is ignoring the departure airport. Runway length limits which classes can leave full of fuel, and the fields around Chicago differ by thousands of feet. Compare them on the airports hub before you fix the aircraft, because the aircraft and the field are one decision, not two.

Mid-cabin: the Citation XLS+ and Learjet 60XR bridge into the midsize category, where the Hawker 800XP is the value play and the Citation Latitude the modern flat-floor choice. A step up brings the Challenger 300/350, Citation Longitude and Gulfstream G280.

Large cabin: the Challenger 604/605, Falcon 2000LXS and Gulfstream G450 handle transatlantic work, and the Gulfstream G650ER, Global 6000 and Falcon 8X fly the legs where a fuel stop is unacceptable.

How many private jet size categories are there?

Eleven, in the way charter operators and brokers actually price aircraft: pistons, turboprops, very light jets, light jets, super light jets, midsize jets, super midsize jets, heavy jets, long range jets, VIP airliners and helicopters. Some brokers collapse this to five or six, but the finer split matters because pricing steps between adjacent categories can exceed forty percent per hour.

Which class is cheapest for four passengers going to New York?

A very light jet is normally the lowest-cost jet answer on that leg, with a typical market range of roughly $8,500 to $11,000 one way, and a light jet sits a few thousand dollars above it with a larger cabin and an enclosed lavatory. What does the hourly rate actually cover?

Do I need a stand-up cabin?

Below about two and a half hours, most passengers never notice. Above three hours it changes the trip materially, particularly for anyone over six feet or anyone who intends to work. Stand-up cabins begin in the midsize class and are standard from super midsize upward. It is the most requested upgrade after seat count for good reason.

Can a light jet fly non-stop from Chicago to Los Angeles?

Sometimes, and not dependably. Light jets are published at 1,300 to 2,000 nautical miles against a 1,516 nm great-circle leg, so a light load in summer with favourable winds can make it. Westbound in winter, headwinds routinely force a technical stop. If a guaranteed non-stop matters, start at super light and plan on midsize.

Is a turboprop less safe than a jet?

No. Turboprops operating under FAA Part 135 meet the same certification, maintenance and crew requirements as jets, and single-engine turbines like the PC-12 have long service records in commercial use. The differences are altitude, speed and weather capability, not safety standards. Operator vetting matters far more than the number of engines or the type of powerplant.
