How to read a block time and a price band
A block time is not a cruise calculation. It includes taxi out at a field where you may be third in line behind airline traffic, a climb that burns time as well as fuel, and a taxi in at the far end. On a short leg the taxi component can be a quarter of the total, which is why the difference between a very light jet and a super midsize on a 640 nm route is measured in minutes.
A price band is the range of all-in one-way quotes we typically see on that pairing in a normal week, for that class, including the usual fees. The low end is an aircraft already positioned near Chicago on a day nobody else wants. The high end is a peak-season Friday with a tail flying in from another state to collect you.
Two things move a quote outside its band in either direction. A repositioning leg you happen to match will take it below; a curfew, a slot restriction or a high-demand event window will take it above. Both are corridor-specific, which is why each route page carries its own seasonality note rather than a generic one.
The bands in the table are for a midsize jet because it is the class that flies every one of these fifteen corridors without an argument. Lighter aircraft price below it on the shorter routes and cannot dependably fly the longest ones; heavier aircraft price above it everywhere. Distance decides the class more than anything else
There is a rough progression that holds across almost every corridor here. Under 400 nautical miles, a turboprop is competitive and a very light jet is comfortable. From 400 to 1,000, light jets dominate on price and midsize jets win on cabin. From 1,000 to 1,300, a light jet is still possible but starts making compromises with a full cabin. Past 1,300, midsize is the sensible floor and super midsize is the dependable answer.
Winter changes the arithmetic on the longest corridors. A westbound headwind of a hundred knots or more can push a leg that flies non-stop in June into a technical stop for fuel in January, which adds forty minutes on the ground and a landing fee at a field you did not plan to visit. Eastbound the same winds work for you.
What breaks the progression is passengers and baggage. Eight people with ski bags on the Aspen corridor is not a light jet trip regardless of what the range chart says, because the aircraft runs out of hold before it runs out of fuel. The same eight people with overnight bags to Nashville is comfortably a light jet. Weight, not distance, is the constraint that quietly forces most upgrades.
The second thing that breaks it is the destination airport. Aspen restricts aircraft types outright, Naples has a 5,290 ft runway and a noise curfew, Teterboro caps aircraft at 100,000 lb and closes overnight, and San Carlos on the San Francisco peninsula takes light jets only. On those four corridors the field narrows the fleet before distance has a say.

Short legs under 700 nautical miles
These are day-trip corridors. The aircraft can usually collect you, fly, wait and return within a single crew duty day, which removes overnight charges and makes the arithmetic considerably friendlier than the distance suggests.
Chicago to Nashville at 355 nm is the shortest on the list and the only one where a turboprop is genuinely competitive, at roughly an hour and forty minutes against a light jet's seventy. Chicago to Toronto at 380 nm adds a border, which means customs at both ends and a preference for fields with established clearance rather than the closest ramp.
Chicago to Atlanta at 520 nm is a steady corporate corridor into DeKalb-Peachtree, with sharp peaks around the Masters and college football. Chicago to Teterboro and Chicago to New York are effectively the same flight with different destination preferences — Teterboro for Midtown, Westchester for Connecticut, Morristown when the curfew is a problem.
Chicago to Dallas at 685 nm closes the group. Texas has a deep based fleet, so one-way pricing on this corridor is more competitive than the mileage alone implies, and Love Field puts you six minutes from downtown.
Medium legs of 700 to 1,100 nautical miles
This band is where a light jet stops being automatic and a midsize jet starts earning its price. Two and a half to three and a half hours in the air is long enough that cabin height, a proper lavatory and baggage volume change the quality of the trip rather than just the invoice.
Chicago to Denver at 785 nm brings density altitude into the plan for the summer return out of Centennial, which is a genuine performance constraint rather than a talking point. Chicago to Aspen at 869 nm is the most restricted destination on this entire list: aircraft must be approved for the special-qualification approach into ASE, the field has a curfew, and several common midsize types simply cannot go.
Chicago to Naples and Chicago to West Palm Beach are the seasonal migration corridors, running south from mid-October and north from Easter. Naples Municipal's 5,290 ft runway and strict noise curfew are the two constraints that most often move a trip to Fort Myers instead.
Chicago to Miami at 1,080 nm rounds out the group, with Opa-Locka as the business default and Art Basel week in December the single hardest week of the year to source a tail.
Transcontinental legs beyond 1,200 nautical miles
Everything in this band is a fuel-planning conversation, especially westbound in winter. Published range figures assume four passengers and still air; a full cabin with luggage against a strong jet stream is a different aircraft on paper.
Chicago to Las Vegas at 1,275 nm and Chicago to Scottsdale at 1,280 nm are close enough in distance to be priced almost identically, and both attract group bookings — Henderson Executive and Scottsdale Airport are the fields worth asking for. CES in January makes the Las Vegas corridor genuinely scarce rather than merely expensive.
Chicago to Los Angeles at 1,516 nm and Chicago to San Francisco at 1,590 nm are the two legs where we most often recommend departing from DuPage rather than Chicago Executive, because 7,571 ft of runway removes the weight compromise on a full-fuel westbound departure. Eastbound returns on both corridors are frequent empty-leg opportunities.
Both West Coast corridors also reward being specific about the destination field. Van Nuys and Burbank serve completely different parts of Los Angeles, and in the Bay Area the choice between San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco International can change ground time by an hour and handling fees by thousands. Name the neighbourhood you are going to rather than the city, and the field usually picks itself.
Crossing the border and other complications
Only one corridor on this list leaves the country, and it changes the process more than the flying. Chicago to Toronto is 380 nautical miles and an hour and a quarter in a light jet, but it requires customs clearance on both sides, passenger documentation submitted in advance, and a departure field that can handle the outbound and inbound formalities. Midway's full-time federal presence makes it the simple answer; Chicago Executive works with notice.
Downtown Toronto's island airport adds its own aircraft restrictions and a curfew, so a trip that assumes Billy Bishop and gets Pearson is a forty-minute ground difference at the far end. Cross-border empty legs are less common than domestic ones because customs and crew-duty planning make them harder to sell at short notice, though midweek repositioning deals do appear.
Domestically, the complications are curfews and slots rather than paperwork. Aspen, Naples and Teterboro all restrict operating hours, and Teterboro is the densest business-aviation airport in the country, so a delay on the ground in Chicago can cascade into a slot problem on arrival. How far ahead to book each type of corridor
Short business corridors — Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, Teterboro — can usually be arranged inside twenty-four hours in a normal week, because the Chicago based fleet is deep and the aircraft are already positioned. Same-day is often possible if you are flexible on the departure field.
Leisure and seasonal corridors behave differently. The Florida routes run one direction at a time, southbound from mid-October and northbound from Easter, which means the aircraft is scarce in the popular direction and cheap in the other. Aspen at Christmas, Las Vegas during CES and San Francisco during the largest technology conference week are the three windows where lift genuinely runs out rather than simply becoming expensive.
As a working rule: twenty-four to forty-eight hours for a weekday business leg, two weeks for a weekend leisure trip in season, and two to three months for a named event that everybody in the country is flying to. Booking earlier does not usually improve the price on a normal week, but it does secure the aircraft you actually want rather than the one that is left.
One way, round trip and the repositioning question
A round trip on the same day is almost always the best value structure available, because the aircraft stays with you instead of flying home empty and returning. A one-way charter on a corridor with a deep based fleet at the far end — Dallas, Atlanta, Teterboro — prices better than a one-way into a thin market, because the operator has a realistic chance of selling the return.
Empty legs are the corridor-level version of the same logic. They exist because an aircraft has to get somewhere, and the Chicago to Teterboro and South Florida to Midwest corridors generate more of them than anywhere else in this list. They are worth chasing only if your dates are genuinely flexible, because they cancel when the paying trip that created them changes.

Why is a one-way charter almost as expensive as a round trip?
Because the aircraft still has to get home. Unless the operator sells the return leg to someone else, a one-way charter pays for the empty repositioning flight in the quote. On corridors with deep charter markets at the destination, such as Dallas or Teterboro, that risk is lower and one-way pricing improves noticeably.
How much does the destination airport change the price?
