Light Jet vs Midsize Jet: Which Should You Charter?

The light jet vs midsize jet decision is the most consequential single choice on a charter quote, and most buyers make it on instinct. The gap between the two classes is roughly $2,000 to $2,400 an hour, which on a typical Midwest business trip is the difference between a comfortable number and one that needs explaining.

What you buy with that money is specific and measurable: about eight inches of cabin height, a genuinely wider aisle, more baggage volume, and the ability to cross the country non-stop with the seats full. What you do not buy is meaningful speed. This piece lays out the numbers, then works through four booking scenarios and gives an honest answer to each.

Light jet vs midsize jet: the specifications that matter

Two rows deserve attention. The cruise speed bands overlap almost entirely — 400–450 kts against 440–470 kts — which is why the block-time savings on a two-hour leg are measured in minutes. The cabin height rows do not overlap at all, and that is the real product difference.

The cabin, in numbers rather than adjectives

The Cessna Citation CJ3+ gives you 57 inches of cabin height. The Cessna Citation Latitude gives you 72. That is the whole argument, expressed in fifteen inches. Cabin width moves the same way, and it is what you notice when two people try to pass in the aisle. Below about 68 inches you move around the cabin in a permanent stoop; at 72 inches you have a genuine stand-up cabin and most adults stand upright, and the flat floor on the Latitude means you are not straddling a dropped aisle while you do it.

Baggage capacity is the second real difference and the one that ruins more trips than cabin height does. The 65 cubic feet on the Cessna Citation CJ3+ handles four passengers with roll-aboards and briefcases. It does not handle four sets of golf clubs, and it does not handle a family relocating to Florida for the season. The Cessna Citation Latitude carries 127 cubic feet, which is nearly double, and this is why the class shows up so consistently on the Chicago to Naples route.

Lavatories are the third. Both the Cessna Citation CJ3+ and the Embraer Phenom 300E have an enclosed lavatory, which is not universal across the light class — several common light jets have a curtained aft arrangement that passengers find genuinely uncomfortable on a three-hour leg. On a midsize aircraft the lavatory is enclosed and externally serviced as standard. If your trip is over two and a half hours with more than four adults, confirm this line on the trip sheet. Connectivity is the fourth variable and it tracks the individual airframe rather than the class, so a well-equipped light jet will beat an older midsize on Wi-Fi every time.

Range, and the fuel-stop question

On paper the light class covers 1,300–2,000 nm and the midsize class 2,000–2,600 nm. In practice the numbers that matter are the ones flown at real payload — passengers, baggage and IFR reserves aboard — westbound against a winter jet stream.

Chicago to Los Angeles is where this separates cleanly. The route is 1516 nm. The published light jet block time is 4h 45m, with the important caveat that it "usually needs a fuel stop westbound against the jet stream". The midsize entry reads 4h 15m and "reliable non-stop; the price/performance sweet spot". A technical stop costs you forty-five minutes on the ground, an extra landing fee and additional billed flight time — which frequently erases the hourly-rate saving that made the light jet attractive.

East and south, the picture reverses. Chicago to New York at 640 nm is a comfortable light-jet leg: 1h 55m against 1h 50m for a midsize. Marginal time saving, materially bigger cabin. The same holds for Chicago to Dallas at 685 nm and Chicago to Aspen at 869 nm, with one caveat on the latter — several midsize types cannot land at Aspen at all, so the class step-up is not automatically the safer choice there.

The price gap, route by route

Read the last two columns together and the shape of the decision becomes obvious. On Chicago to Nashville you are paying roughly four thousand dollars more to arrive five minutes earlier. Nobody buys a midsize jet for that. They buy it because eight people are going and the light jet seats six comfortably, or because the trip is three hours and the cabin height starts to register somewhere around minute ninety.

Four scenarios and the honest answer

Four executives, Chicago to Dallas, same-day return

Light jet, without hesitation. The everyday choice on this corridor. The block time is 2h 10m, everyone is working on a laptop rather than walking around, and you save enough on the round trip to fund the next two of these. A Embraer Phenom 300E or Cessna Citation CJ3+ is the everyday answer on this corridor.

Eight people, Chicago to Miami, four days of luggage

Midsize, and possibly super midsize. Eight passengers is at the ceiling of the light class — 6–7 passengers is the honest figure, and the eighth seat is often a belted lavatory seat nobody wants for three hours. Baggage settles it before the seat count does.

Two people, Chicago to Los Angeles, winter

Midsize, counterintuitively. This is the case where the cheaper aircraft costs more. Westbound in January a light jet is likely to need a fuel stop, and the total for a light jet plus a technical stop plus an hour of everyone's afternoon lands close to the midsize number anyway. Buy the non-stop.

Six people, Chicago to Aspen, ski week

Light jet, with type verification. Aircraft must be approved for the ASE special-qualification approach, and that qualification is not a formality — Curfew, terrain and a 7,820 ft runway at 7,820 ft elevation — aircraft-type restricted. Ski bags eat baggage volume fast, so confirm the specific airframe's hold before you commit, and be aware that christmas through new year, presidents day weekend and the x games are the three windows where ase slots and lift sell out months ahead.

The class most buyers should be looking at instead

The super light class sits directly in the gap and is routinely ignored because the name is unfamiliar. It covers 7–8 passengers, 1,900–2,300 nm of range, 4 ft 9 in – 5 ft 1 in of cabin, at $4,200–$5,600 an hour. That is chicago to los angeles, seattle or west palm beach non-stop in most conditions.

The Cessna Citation XLS+ is the aircraft that makes the argument. 68 inches of cabin height — the same as the Hawker 800XP — with 90 cubic feet of baggage, 8 in the double club, 9 with the belted lavatory seat, and an hourly rate closer to a light jet than a midsize. For a large share of Chicago charter trips it is the correct aircraft and nobody asks for it by name.

How to make the call

Work through it in this order. How many passengers, honestly, including anyone who might join. How many bags and what shape. How long is the leg, and is it westbound. Does anyone on board need to stand up, walk around or use a proper lavatory during the flight. Only then look at the hourly rate.

Done in that order, the light jet wins most Midwest and eastern trips and the midsize wins most transcontinental and full-cabin ones, with the super light class quietly taking a lot of what falls in between.
