Piper Navajo Charter from Chicago
A Piper Navajo charter is the cheapest way to put six people in a private aircraft out of the Chicago area, and it is not a limousine. The PA-31 Chieftain is a 1970s-designed piston twin that cruises at 180 knots, has no lavatory, no Wi-Fi and a cabin 51 inches high. What it has is a rate that starts at $850–$1,400 an hour, which is a different universe from anything with a turbine in it.
This page is deliberately blunt about the trade-offs, because the worst outcome in charter is a passenger who expected a jet and got a piston twin. Read the cabin section before you book.
What this aircraft is for
The Navajo does one job well: it turns a three-to-five-hour Midwest drive into a forty-to-ninety-minute flight for less money than any turbine aircraft can. Survey crews, regional sales teams, small-town medical specialists, newspaper and parts runs, and families getting to a lake house on a Friday afternoon. Nobody charters a Chieftain because they want to. They charter it because the arithmetic on a regional hop works and nothing with a turbine in it comes close on price.
Piper built the PA-31 family from 1973 onward as a workhorse, and the Chieftain — the stretched, counter-rotating-engine version — became the backbone of American regional air taxi for two decades. Hundreds are still in commercial service. The airframes are old, but old is not the same as neglected: these aircraft fly under FAA Part 135 maintenance programs with the same inspection discipline applied to a Gulfstream, and the FAA publishes those requirements openly at faa.gov.
The honest framing is this: a Navajo is a very capable light twin doing a job that no more modern aircraft does at the same price. If your alternative is driving, it is an excellent choice. If your alternative is a King Air, it is a compromise you should make with your eyes open.

The cabin, told straight
The cabin is 51 inches high and 50 inches wide across 12.5 feet. That is narrower than a Phenom 100 and lower than everything else on this site. You board through a door on the left rear, walk in a crouch, and sit in a seat that is closer to a good car seat than to a club chair. Six people fit; six people with substantial luggage do not.
There is no lavatory. Not a curtained one — none at all. On a forty-minute leg to Madison this is irrelevant. On a two-hour leg to St. Louis with a full cabin, it is the single most important planning fact about the aircraft, and the reason we ask about passenger age and trip length before recommending it.
Two Lycoming piston engines a few feet from the windows are loud in a way turbine aircraft are not — a harder, higher-frequency sound than a turboprop's drone. Headsets or noise-cancelling headphones are worth bringing. Conversation across the cabin is difficult; conversation with the person beside you is fine.
The Chieftain is an unpressurized aircraft — the pressurized Navajo is a separate and much rarer variant — so operators cruise in the low teens where supplemental oxygen is not required rather than anywhere near the 24,000 ft certified ceiling. That is the single fact that explains most of what the flight feels like.
Flying lower and slower than anything turbine-powered means the aircraft goes through weather rather than over it. Summer thermals in the afternoon, and low cloud and ice in winter, both affect the Navajo more than they affect a jet. Delays and route changes are more common. That is not a knock on the operator; it is physics, and any honest broker will tell you the same.
Baggage is 35 cubic feet split between the nose locker and aft lockers, which is genuinely useful for the size — 6 passengers with baggage in the nose and aft lockers. Wi-Fi: not fitted. Catering is whatever you carry aboard.
Hourly rates and the total-trip maths
The typical market range for a Chicago-area Chieftain is $850–$1,400 per flight hour. Actual quotes vary with date, aircraft and availability. It is by some distance the lowest number we publish, and it is the entire reason the type still flies commercially. Positioning matters less here than on a jet, because these aircraft are scattered across small Midwest fields rather than concentrated at two or three big FBOs.
The catch that catches everybody: at 180 knots you buy more hours to cover the same distance. A 300 nm leg is roughly an hour in a King Air and roughly an hour and three-quarters in a Navajo. The per-hour saving is large enough that the Navajo still wins on total flight cost, but the margin narrows with every mile, and past about 400 nm the extra time on the aircraft stops being worth the money saved.

Against the King Air 350i and the PC-12 NGX
Both alternatives are turbine aircraft that cost two to three times as much per hour. The question is never which is better — it is whether the difference is worth paying for on your particular trip.
Versus the [King Air 350i](/aircraft/turboprops/king-air-350/). The King Air is 132 knots faster, pressurized to a 35,000 ft ceiling, seats 8, carries 71 cubic feet of baggage and has a lavatory. It costs roughly three times as much per hour. On a 150 nm leg with four passengers, that difference buys you perhaps twenty minutes and a much nicer twenty minutes — worth it to some buyers, not to others. On a 500 nm leg it buys you an hour, a smoother ride and a bathroom, and it becomes hard to argue against.
Versus the [Pilatus PC-12 NGX](/aircraft/turboprops/pilatus-pc-12/). The Pilatus is the smallest step up that still puts you in a turbine with a pressurized cabin, and at the bottom of its band it is the closest thing to an affordable upgrade from a Navajo. It is quieter, faster, flies above more weather and has a curtained lavatory. If your trip is regularly over 200 nm and the budget can stretch, this is the aircraft to price alongside the Chieftain before you decide.

Before you commit
- Tell the operator the true passenger weights and bag count. On a piston twin, weight and balance is a real constraint rather than a formality.
- Ask what the aircraft has for air conditioning. A Chieftain sitting on a July ramp in Illinois gets hot quickly.
- Ask about pressurization and oxygen provisions on the specific variant, and what cruise altitude the operator plans to use.
- Build schedule slack. Weather affects this aircraft more than a jet, and a tight same-day connection is the wrong thing to plan around it.

Is a piston twin as safe as a turboprop or a jet?
Charter piston aircraft operate under the same FAA Part 135 certification, maintenance and crew requirements as turbine charter aircraft. The differences are operational rather than regulatory: pistons fly lower and slower, so they encounter more weather, and they have less performance margin. A good operator manages this by cancelling or delaying more often, which is exactly what you want them to do.
How many people fit in a Piper Navajo Chieftain?
Six passengers. 6 passengers with baggage in the nose and aft lockers, using the nose locker and aft lockers for a total of 35 cubic feet. Six adults with overnight bags is realistic. Six adults with full-size suitcases, sports equipment or trade-show materials is not, and the operator will need actual weights before confirming the trip.
When is it better to just drive?
Under about 120 nautical miles with one or two passengers, driving usually wins once you count travel to the FBO, ramp time and ground transport at the other end. Chicago to Milwaukee is the clearest example. The Navajo starts to make obvious sense past 200 nm, or any time you are moving four or more people, or connecting to a longer onward flight.
